In a historic move marking the end of a colonial legacy, the Karnataka State Police Department has officially discontinued the use of the British-era slouch hat worn by constables and will now adopt the modern navy blue peak cap in line with other South Indian states.
The decision was finalized during the Annual Conference of Senior Police Officers held at the State Police Headquarters on Friday, which was presided over by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. After reviewing the headgear used in states like Maharashtra, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, the state has chosen to standardize the uniform with a navy blue peak cap.
With this move, all police personnel across Karnataka will now wear the new navy blue peak cap, replacing the outdated slouch hat that has been a part of the uniform for decades.
Why the Change?
The shift follows recommendations from the Police Kit Specification Committee, which had been directed by the Director General of Police (DGP) to evaluate the practicality and relevance of continuing the slouch hat.
Key reasons for the transition include:
Health concerns: The old slouch hat was found to cause discomfort and potential health issues, with even the Union Health Ministry issuing warnings about its effects.
Lack of modern appeal: The outdated design often drew ridicule and did not match contemporary policing aesthetics.
Functional discomfort: The slouch hat was cumbersome and lacked stability, whereas the new peak cap with firm elastic support is considered more comfortable and professional by police personnel themselves.
The change represents an important step toward modernization and uniformity with other states, while also prioritizing the well-being and dignity of police officers.
