Four people were killed and at least 12 others injured in a shooting that broke out early Saturday in downtown Leland, Mississippi, officials said.
Authorities said they are looking for an 18-year-old man for questioning in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff urged anyone with information to reach out to the police chief or the sheriff’s office, reported news agency AP.
Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News that the incident occurred around midnight on the city’s main street, where crowds had gathered for Leland High School’s homecoming weekend. Four of the injured were airlifted to nearby hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately known.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Lee said the shooter had not been identified or taken into custody as of Saturday morning. “Justice will be served,” he said, while expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
“I just want to say, you know, our prayers and condolences go out to the family of the deceased and the ones that's been injured and shot,” the mayor added.
The Mississippi bureau of investigation said it is assisting local authorities in probing the incident.
Mayor Lee described the shooting as a shock to the small community of roughly 4,000 residents in Washington County. “Because this is not something that’s ever happened here before,” he told Fox News Digital, calling for prayers for the city.
“It was homecoming weekend, of course, and everybody’s family and friends and neighbors [were] together having fun in the downtown area, as we do every year,” he said.
Authorities have not released any details about a possible motive or suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
