One woman's investigation into the very best sausages in UK supermarkets has concluded that one beats the rest, and it might not be from the store you expect. Many Brits have a preference when it comes to the sausages they buy to cook at home. Some people have sworn by the same brands for years and the same cooking methods. But a new study by one food expert has claimed to find the very best.
Food writer at The Telegraph, Xanthe Clay, tasted 50 different supermarket sausages and decided which one was her favourite. She tried both refrigerated and frozen sausages to determine the very best, enjoying both cheap, own-brand sausages as well as ones on the higher end of the scale. To make sure she was going in blind, she asked her husband to cook all of the sausages for her to try, so she could rate them before she knew which ones were which. She assessed them based on appearance, smell, flavour and texture.
Coming out on top was Co-op Irresistible Pork Sausages, which cost £3.90 for a 400g pack, which contains 6 sausages. "This looks pale but plump and has a lovely meaty sausage flavour," she said.
She also revealed that, although these sausages were low in salt, you wouldn't know that from the flavour. She praised them for their "properly savoury" taste and their "sticky" outer skin.
She also named the best frozen sausages that she tried, which was Braemoor Thick Pork Sausages that she purchased from Lidl. Even though they came out on top against other frozen sausages, she still did not rate it very favourably, giving it only two stars out of five.
The top two on the list consisted of the best fresh and the best frozen sausages, which are named above. Taking third place on her list of the best sausages from UK supermarkets is Farmison & Co The Nidderdale Sausage, which costs £6.95 for 6 sausages from Ocado.
Fourth place went to Waitrose Duchy Organic Pork Sausages, followed by Morrisons The Best Ultimate Pork Sausages, M&S Food Collection British Pork Sausages and Asda Flavourful Pork Sausages. Also included in the top ten were Powters Newmarket Pig Premium Sausages from Ocado, M&S Food Butchers Sausages 75% Pork and M&S Food Collection Ultimate Pork Sausages.
Taking the last spot on the list at number 50 is Sainsbury's Stamford Street Co. Thick Pork Sausages (frozen). She described these sausages as "yellow gold - the colour of battered cod, not sausage".
Other sausages that ranked poorly were The Black Farmer's Daughter Premium Pork Sausages (frozen), By Sainsbury's Thick Pork Sausages (frozen) and Asda Thick Pork Sausages (frozen).
