There's one kitchen scrap almost everyone throws away without a second thought. But that "trash" could actually be one of the best natural cleaners in your home. With just a few minutes of preparation, it turns into a powerful scrub that tackles messes like a 'magic eraser.' The key ingredient: eggshells.
Social media star, creative_explained, revealed that the kitchen scrap works beyond being a natural fertiliser for your garden, but is also a heavy-duty scrub for in and around your home. Within his video, he stated: "See eggshells, don't throw 'em out, instead bake them in the oven like a muffin.
"Get them hot enough and you can turn them into dust. And that's it! A homemade abrasive. We took waste and turned it into a natural cleaning agent that works like a magic eraser. Use it on glass or anything stainless.
"The calcium, the gritty texture, enables you to penetrate and lift stains up." In the video, he is seen scrubbing burnt-on food stains with the natural abrasive and cleaning off tap stains.
How to make the natural abrasive-courtesy of Real Food RNIngredients
- One cup ground up eggshell (about two dozen eggs worth)
- Three cups of baking soda
Method
To begin, crack the eggs and place the empty shells on a baking sheet. Spread the shells out on a cookie sheet and let them dry, either in the sun or in a low oven, until they're brittle enough to crush easily by hand.
They must be completely dry; otherwise, they won't grind properly. Crush the shells into a coarse powder using a mortar and pestle or a blender.
Other methodsAn expert from AllRecipes revealed: "Residue from oils, spilt sauces, sugary syrups, and other food can end up spilling down the sides of your pans, causing the underside to accumulate a seemingly impenetrable layer of dirt and grime. It's a natural part of a pan's lifespan, but it doesn't have to be a life sentence-thanks to ketchup."
Ketchup contains vinegar as one of its main ingredients; vinegar's key component is acetic acid, which can help break down dirt, oils, residue, stains, and even some bacteria. However, due to its thicker consistency, ketchup is better for cleaning the inside and outside of pots than watery vinegar.
Simply, spread a thick layer of ketchup over the surface and allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for tougher buildup. After soaking, gently scrub with a sponge or scouring pad. Once completed, rinse the pan in warm, soapy water, then dry it thoroughly with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
