To say it's a critical summer for Manchester United would probably be a ludicrous understatement. After the club's dismal 2024/25 campaign, Ruben Amorim is desperately trying to overhaul his squad without the prospect of European football next season.
His task has been made harder without the financial windfall that would have come with a Europa League final win. Instead, the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham has led to speculation over a number of club departures and signings. United kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Everton on August 3, and there is plenty to do if the Red Devils are to be in a position to challenge for honours again by then.
Express Sport looks at the issues that United have to prioritise this summer...
Get the Mbeumo deal doneRemember the Frenkie de Jong saga? If you need reminding, United manager Erik ten Hag spent an entire summer and beyond seemingly negotiating a deal for the Barcelona star, and yet the inevitable transfer never happened.
History is now threatening to repeat itself with Bryan Mbeumo, who reportedly remains keen on a move despite Brentford turning down two initial offers. United must bite the bullet and meet the demands of the London club, or risk looking like a laughing stock again if the deal breaks down.

When Andre Onana arrived in a £47million deal from Inter Milan two years ago, there were high hopes. The brutal reality, though, is that the Cameroon international has been a liability, and persisting with him next season would be self-sabotage on Anorim's behalf.
United have been linked with a £25m move for Aston Villa and Argentina stopper Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup winner will bring controversy with him, but more importantly, he'll also bring a shot-stopping ability not seen at Old Trafford since prime David de Gea. Sign him now.
Raid Atalanta for EdersonCasemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Sofyan Amrabat, the list goes on. United need a competent defensive midfielder to shield their back three, and with doubts arising over the future of Kobbie Mainoo, need to splash big to sort the issue.
Atalanta star Ederson is being tracked by the club and is reportedly available for around £52m. If United can successfully pursue their interest, the long-term benefits would far outweigh the financial hit.
Let the dead wood goFunding all of the above moves won't be easy given the obvious financial constraints currently plaguing the club. The answer to that imbalance is obvious-it's time to sell on Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund and send a message that underperformance and poor attitude can no longer be tolerated in Manchester.
