A man has shared his honest verdict after spending a night in what he claimed was among the most bizarre accommodations available in the UK during a recent trip to Oxford.
Occasionally, it can be refreshing to escape from your own home, even for just one evening, and book into a hotel for the night. Whilst there are several budget-conscious chain hotels available throughout the UK, sometimes it can be entertaining to try something new and unique.
This was precisely what a man called Phil sought to achieve as he chronicled his overnight stay in one of Britain's most extraordinary hotel experiences.
Previously a Victorian public lavatory, The Netty is a unique boutique accommodation situated in central Oxford which provides visitors with a truly exceptional experience.
Following the lavatory's closure for 17 years, The Netty on St Giles' was formerly a gentlemen's toilet constructed in 1885, before being compelled to shut in 2008 owing to safety issues.
The former toilets remained derelict for years before proprietors of the Galaxie Hotel, its associated establishment, received planning consent for the venture in 2019.
It has now welcomed guests for overnight stays, and Phil was eager to share his experience for his one million TikTok followers.
"You can spend money and spend the night in a public toilet," he began, before explaining it had actually been transformed into luxury hotel accommodation. Phil disclosed he paid £130 for the evening accommodation he reserved, situated in the heart of a bustling thoroughfare.
To reach his destination, he explained how he traversed a one-way street onto a traffic island, where he encountered a ground-level road sign that guided him down to what appeared to be former public conveniences.
"You go into the one you've been allocated and see that it is amazing," Phil shared, while showing clips of the completely refurbished hotel suite.
"The quality is brilliant, this isn't just a cash grab. Proper thought, design, and, most importantly, ventilation has gone into this," he added.
"This is the weirdest placed I've stayed," he declared, insisting it wasn't simply due to the building's previous function as public lavatories centuries earlier.
Phil continued to express his amazement regarding the room's location beneath a traffic island in central Oxford, where vehicles are perpetually 'whizzing about' overhead while you slumber.
"It's like you're a weird side character in a Roald Dahl book," he remarked, before beginning to wonder whether he was occupying the former gents' or ladies' facilities.
Satisfied with his accommodation, which featured a comfortable king-sized bed, a contemporary en-suite washroom, and well-stocked mini fridge, Phil ascended the staircase to street level to investigate the present-day public lavatories, which were tucked beneath a cemetery.
After relishing his day out in Oxford, he returned to his room that evening, discovering it was now encircled by young people, whom he had to navigate past in order to reach the stairs leading to the hotel room door.
"Motorbikes and heavy vehicles are the main enemy of your sleep through the night, but overall, it went well. I quite enjoyed my stay," Phil shared as he woke up the next day.
People quickly flocked to the comment section to share their thoughts, and to enquire about the room in question, such as what the items in the mini bar cost. To this, Phil replied: "Included... it even had a couple of little cocktails in there.
"Does it still smell like a public toilet? I feel like you'd never be able to get rid of the smell," another person asked. Phil went on to say: "No you don't smell anything! You do forget where you are once you're in bed."
