Traffic built on the M25 as the emergency services scrambled to a van fire on Wednesday night (July 23). The road was closed clockwise between J27 (for the M11) and J28 (for the A12, near Brentwood) in Essex.
Cameras showed long queues on the motorway.
In an update at 10.56pm, National Highways said the M25 "has been reopened in both directions after the earlier van fire caused major delays on the key route. No lane closures remain.
"All closures have been removed on the M25 clockwise between J27 (M11/Epping) and J28 (Brentwood) following the van fire," the government agency said.
"Lane closures also lifted on the anti-clockwise carriageway. Please have a safe onwards journey this evening."
