Wayne Rooney is reportedly being eyed for a sensational return to management by non-league Macclesfield. The Manchester United icon has been out of work since being sacked by Plymouth Argyle earlier this year.
He endured a dismal spell with the side - that following disappointing periods in charge of Derby, DC United and Birmingham City. But that does not appear to have put off other clubs, with Rooney being lined up for a sensational return to the dugout.
According to The Sun, National League North side Macclesfield are eyeing a move for the former forward as they aim to find a replacement for Robbie Savage. He is set to leave the club for League Two side Forest Green Rovers.
Savage spearheaded a stunning charge to promotion to the sixth tier of English football last season, Macclesfield winning 35 of their 42 games and collecting an eye-watering 109 points.
And while club chiefs are keen on a move for Rooney, he has recently spoken out on his future and hinted that he wasn’t looking for a return to management any time soon. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m enjoying it. So, that’s where I’ll be."

Meanwhile, his wife Colleen has also offered her take and claimed that Rooney’s punditry work was enough to keep him busy. She said: “At the minute, he's really happy on TV, podcasts and just being at home.
“Plymouth was a bit far. It hasn't worked out at certain clubs. It's something he's passionate about. It's something he might revisit. He's passionate about TV.”
Rooney was sacked by Plymouth back in January following a rotten spell at Home Park. He left with the club bottom of the Championship, while they were eventually relegated under his replacement Miron Muslic, who has since quit for German side Schalke.

Ironically, Plymouth have now turned to another former United player in the form of Tom Cleverley, who was sacked by Watford at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Savage is still in talks over a move to Forest Green having previously claimed he would sack himself at Macclesfield should he fail to earn promotion.
He said: “If I fail, I know my time will be up. I won’t be able to go back to being a director of football, sitting in the stands and judging other people if I’ve come up short. I know everything is on the line.
“Some of the stuff that was said when I took on the job was unpleasant to say the least. It was a horrible summer.
“But this team will get in the play-offs, and I believe we will go up, but if we don’t win promotion I will walk away from the dugout, take a back seat as a part-owner and watch from afar. There will be people who hope I fall flat on my face, but if that happens it won’t be for a lack of effort.”
