So here’s a breakdown of all of the hidden gems you should be tuning into instead of Netflix’s Top 10.

Underrated Netflix films The Outrun

Little Women star Saoirse Ronan stars as a recovering alcoholic who returns to her isolated island home in Orkney in an attempt to heal.

The powerfully raw film has been praised for its emotionally vulnerable scenes and its honest take on addiction.

Alongside Ronan, The Outrun stars Slow Horses’ Saskia Reeves, I May Destroy You actor Paapa Essiedu and Outlander actress Lauren Lyle.

His House

Released five years ago, this unique horror follows a refugee couple from South Sudan who are haunted by an evil entity in their new home.

Not only does the story star Sinners actress Wunmi Mosaku, it features House of the Dragon and Doctor Who legend Matt Smith.

The Forty-Year-Old Version

This hit film went down a storm at the Sundance Film Festival and proved just as favourably with fans, scoring an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 99%.

The witty and heartfelt indie comedy-drama sees a playwright decide to reinvent herself as a rapper on her 40th birthday, delving into the difficulties of being an artist.

The Night Comes For Us

Another big scorer on Rotten Tomatoes with 92% is this brutal yet stylish Indonesian action thriller from 2018.

Remembered for its fast-paced and inventive choreography, the synopsis simply reads: “Ito, a gangland enforcer, is caught amidst a treacherous and violent insurrection within his Triad crime family”.

We Live In Time

One of the newest hidden gems to be added to Netflix is the romantic drama We Live In Time, starring Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield and Oppenheimer’s Florence Pugh.

We Live In Time tells the emotional, funny and messy love story of two people who cross paths after a surprise encounter with the stars applauded for their electric chemistry.

Okja

This action adventure sci-fi film follows a young girl’s quest to save her giant “super pig” from a powerful corporation with critics describing it as original, heart-breaking and thought-provoking.

Okja was brought to life in 2017 by director Bong Joon-ho who was behind the multiple award-winning film Parasite.

Gerald’s Game

Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name and directed by The Haunting franchise’s Mike Flanagan, Gerald’s Game is a psychological thriller as well as a claustrophobic story of survival.

The film stars The Haunting of Hill House actress Carla Gugino who has also had roles in This Boy’s Life, Son in Law and Troop Beverly Hills.

Apostle

This 2018 gothic folk horror film has been praised for its unsettling tone as it revolves around a man who infiltrates a religious cult on a remote Welsh island to rescue his sister.

Its leading man Dan Stevens will be best recognised for his work in both Downton Abbey and Beauty and the Beast.

The Place Beyond The Pines

Crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines is a forgotten gem of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes.

The 2012 film tells the multi-generational story of fathers, sons and the consequences of their actions.

Under the Shadow

Under the Shadow, an Iranian 2016 horror film, won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Set in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War, Under The Shadow is a chilly story that blends both supernatural horror and the real-life anxieties of living in a war zone.
