An unmissable period drama film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video and is a must for those who love stories set in different eras, as others have enjoyed a “masterful” BBC series and some have hailed an “exquisite” adaptation of an Ibsen classic.
The movie came out in 1995 but continues to thrill audiences thanks to its impressive cast of A-listers.
Many viewers have praised the film and one 10/10 review on IMDb read: “Satisfying from start to finish.”
A second reviewer praised the film as a “compelling epic” and stated: “It's simply a great epic about honor [sic], love, and family.”
While a third person titled their review: “An unforgettable epic of love and honor [sic].”

The audience member explained: “What can one say about a film that has one of the blackest, most nihilistic, and occasionally most weirdly -I wont say 'sympathetic'..I will say 'charismatic' villains in the history of the Cinema, and the best sword fight since Flynn and Fairbanks were in their heyday? This is an epic about a stubborn, sometimes foolish, incredibly courageous and honest mans fight for his honor and freedom against tyranny. I loved it [sic].”
Someone else commented in their top-rated review: “Thoroughly enjoyable, intelligently-made period action/drama”.
The user elaborated: “From the excellent acting of an extremely impressive cast, to the intelligently written (and very quotable) script, from the lavish cinematography to the beautiful music score by Carter Burwell, Rob Roy offers a rarity in movie going experiences: one that is nigh impossible to find fault with in any area.”

Rob Roy came out in 1995, the same year as Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, a Hollywood biopic of Scottish freedom fighter and knight William Wallace.
Much like Braveheart, Rob Roy focused on another Scottish legend, Rob Roy, a cattle raider and Jacobite.
The movie was set in 1713 after nobleman Rob Roy MacGregor (played by Liam Neeson) becomes an outlaw seeking vengeance on those who have wronged him and hiding from the Redcoats as well as facing charges of being a Jacobite.

Although the film is known from straying from historical events, it’s garnered high praise.
The film boasted an all-star cast, including Succession’s Brian Cox, Alien’s John Hurt, Pulp Fiction actor Tim Roth, American Horror Story legend Jessica Lange. Jason Flemyng, Line of Duty and Outlander: Blood of My Blood’s Brian McCardie, Andrew Keir, Madam Secretary’s Eric Stoltz.
Hurt and Roth’s villainous performances as Montrose and Cunningham respectively received much praise.
One person noted: “This is a villain you love to loathe. The Roth character is so foppish that he appears somewhat effeminate; but this is merely disguise as he's actually a ruthless master swordsman. Surely this is one of film's top villains ever.”
As another said: “Cunningham(Tim Roth) is an amazing villain and character in this story. Brutally cold and if you watch his face he seems to be able to turn his eyes off and look completely evil.”
A third said: “[T]im Roth's villain is brilliant (you really get to hate the guy) and the supporting cast is most qualified mainly Jessica Lange, John Hurt and Brian Cox.”
