A boy has survived a "horrific freak accident" that left him impaled by the handlebars of his bike.

The youngster wasriding his bicycle at a recreation ground when he crashed and the bike's handlebars punctured all the way through his leg. A passer-by provided first aid to the youngster, who is understood to be around eight years old.

Once emergency services arrived, paramedics took over treatment and the injured boy was taken to hospital. It comes after a mum was left 'traumatised' after a dog walker pushes her in canal as she cycles to work.

An air ambulance was deployed but later stood down and the youngster was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool by road from the scene of the drama at Longridge pump track on a recreation ground in Preston. Taking to Facebook, the boy's mum posted an update on his condition. She said that he will survive, but that he needs to undergo surgery for his leg.

She said: "It was a horrific freak accident. I’m sure the pump track won’t see another injury the same as that one again!"

The £100,000 pump track has been a popular attraction since it opened in April for bicycles, scooters, roller blades, skateboards and wheelchairs, reports Lancashire Live.

Council bosses have already come out to say the incident was not linked to "any defect in the track".

A Ribble Valley Borough Council spokesman told LancsLive: "We have not received a report of an incident at the Longridge Pump Track, but are aware of social media comments regarding an accident.

"From reports, it appears that the accident was not the result of any defect in the track, which has been designed to meet all the latest safety standards, along with signage clearly on display regarding its safe use.

"We will investigate what has happened and if necessary take further action to encourage the track’s safe use."

Last year, doctors had to pull a motorbike handle after it became impaled through a teen's eye socket in a horror crash in Malaysia.

Miraculously the 19-year-old boy escaped the crash with no major injuries and no lasting damage to his sight. The motorbike lever luckily missed the boy's eyeball by millimeters, doctors in Malaysia revealed as they shared gory details of the crash.

Firefighters reportedly had to cut the brake handle from the bike at the scene of the crash so paramedics could get to the boy. He was rushed to Universiti Malaya Eye Research Centre in Kuala Lumpur with a very swollen eye and the bike handle still protruding from his right eye socket.

The 17cm handle went in only slightly to the left of his eyeball. After examining him, medics found the teen's retina, which is the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that helps us see, was cloudy and damaged.
