Body find is linked to leg with sock and shoe washed up on UK beach

A leg that washed up on a UK beach at the beginning of June has been linked to a body that was discovered elsewhere in Britain.

The limb, with a sock and shoe still attached, was discovered on Prestwick Beach in Ayrshire, Scotland. Police now believe it is part of the body of a man found across the sea at a coastal village in Northern Ireland.

Eyewitnesses say the leg bone was "buried under seaweed", which at first was unclear if it belonged to a man or woman.

Police now say it has been linked to the discovery of a man, near the village of Millisle, back in May.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said: "We can confirm that the body found in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle on Wednesday, 21st May has been identified.

"The remains were determined to be male and police are engaging with the family of the deceased.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."

At the time the leg was found, a Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed they launched a probe into the grim discovery.

She said: “Around 10.45am on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick Beach.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
