Navi Mumbai News: Sanpada Vendors Forced To Sell From Roads Despite Completed Market Infrastructure

Vendors in Sanpada Sector 4 continue to occupy roadsides and footpaths despite a fully constructed daily market in Plot No. 17 lying unused. The market, built by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), remains closed to the public, causing daily inconvenience to vendors, residents, and commuters alike.

According to official records procured from the Turbhe ward office, the market was completed over a 1,048 sq. meter plot, accommodating 108 stalls for the vegetable market and 19 stalls for fish vendors. Each stall measures 2.16 sq. meters, and the facility also includes separate toilets for men and women.

The project was completed at a cost of ₹91.59 lakh.

However, even months after construction was completed, vendors have not been allowed to move in. " As a result, residents complained that they continue to sell their goods along roads and walkways, leading to traffic bottlenecks, safety hazards, and a lack of sanitation control.

“This market was built to help us, but it’s just locked up,” said a vendor selling vegetables outside the site. “We are forced to sit on the roadside under the sun and rain, while a perfectly good market building is going to waste.”

Residents have also voiced frustration, saying that the incomplete handover of the market has turned a planned civic solution into a daily nuisance. Civic activists have called the situation an example of how completed public infrastructure often remains unused due to bureaucratic delays or lack of coordination among departments.
